Boa Snakes

Boa Snakes are common in the Americas, and there are larger population groups in Central and South America. Boas dwell in various habitats, such as deserts, rainforests, savannahs, etc. For this reason, Boa Snakes are very diverse in color and size. In the warmer areas, Boa Snakes are active year round, and they are usually less active in cooler climates.

Depending on the type of habitat, Boa Snakes can lead terrestrial, arboreal, or burrowing life. Some snakes have beautiful color patterns, and they range in length from 3 to 20 feet. Large Boa Snakes can kill relatively large animals, such as wild pigs, agoutis, caimans, and even some hoofed animals. They often stalk prey near water. Boas are renowned for their ability to grab bats from the air.

Boa Snakes are skillful hunters. They feed on a variety of game, the size of which depends on the size of a snake. There is just one thing that unifies Boa Constrictor Snakes, and this is their unique method of killing prey. Although they do not have venomous glands, this does not make them less formidable hunters than venomous snakes. Boidae kill by striking game from the ambush and rapidly coiling around it and squeezing hard enough to compress its ribcage and thus suffocate it. They do not chew their food, as their digestive system features glands that produce extremely strong acids. Boa Snakes swallow food in whole, and this can be enough to keep them satisfied for several days.

Boa Snakes have claw-like formations, which are actually rudimentary hind limbs inherited form the boas lizard-like ancestors. They are more pronounced in males than females and they play an important role in courtship. Receptive females emit a secretion from the cloaca and thus attract males. Boa Snakes give birth to 50-60 small snakes at once.

Constrictor Snakes can be good pets, but having a snake in possession is a matter of great responsibility. Captive Boa Snakes are more likely to make good pets than wild-caught Boidae. Large snakes, such as pythons, are known to have killed humans. However, Boa Snakes do not usually perpetrate attacks against humans without provocation. They are most likely to do so in defense of their territory or in an attempt to secure their young. Boa Snakes are often domesticated as rodent controllers.
